Training Activities

Developing the Next Generation of Fermentation Experts

Building scientific excellence requires more than generating new knowledge. It also means equipping researchers and professionals with the skills to apply it. Throughout the project, HealthFerm has established a comprehensive training and capacity-building programme that supports early-career and senior researchers alike while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across microbiology, food technology, nutrition, consumer science and sustainability.

HealthFerm partners jointly organised webinars, workshops and seasonal schools that provide participants with access to the latest scientific developments in plant-based fermented foods. The programme combined expert lectures with interactive discussions, practical training and networking opportunities, enabling participants to exchange knowledge across disciplines and build lasting professional connections. Many of these activities were organised in collaboration with the HealthGrain Forum, ensuring that the training reaches a broad European community and continues beyond the lifetime of the project.

Training topics reflected the multidisciplinary nature of HealthFerm and covered areas ranging from fermentation microbiology, omics technologies and food composition to health effects, consumer behaviour and the regulatory framework for fermented foods. Recordings of the webinar series remain openly available through the HealthFerm website, extending the project's educational impact to researchers, students and other interested stakeholders worldwide.

A highlight of the programme was the annual HealthFerm Summer School, which brought together PhD researchers from across the consortium for intensive, hands-on training. Hosted by consortium partners, the Summer School combined scientific presentations, communication coaching, collaborative exercises and peer learning, helping participants strengthen both their research expertise and transferable skills.

By investing in training and knowledge exchange, HealthFerm is creating a new generation of scientists capable of addressing complex challenges in food fermentation. The programme strengthens Europe's research capacity in fermented foods while building a collaborative community that will continue advancing healthy and sustainable food systems long after the project has ended.
